Project Three
Let's Talk About Sex, Baby!
Developing a Feminist Sex Education Curriculum
(Approx. 500 words)
Abstinence-only education is becoming common-place in America 's schools, even in the face of mounting evidence that suggests it is rarely effective in lowering teenage sexual activity. This trend is disconcerting, and suggests that young people today are having sex without full information about the risks of STDs and pregnancy.
Group Project: Think about your high school sex education curriculum and ask yourself how sex savvy are you? Your task is to develop a supplemental sex education curriculum for your high school and then deliver the goods if you want. So, virtually sit down with your group and come up with an innovative activity (a skit, a role-playing game, a contest, etc.) that teaches high-schoolers about some aspect of safe sex. As always, be creative and try to incorporate some of the themes from this lesson into your sexy curriculum.
Once your activity is complete, each of you needs to look up the address and principal of your high school. Compose a short letter introducing yourself to the principle and describing your interest in ensuring that today's kids have access to a variety of messages about safe sex and your commitment to deliver these messages in innovative ways. Post your letter (including the name and address-email or actual- of your principal) as a comment once the group activity has been published. (Approx. 100 words) If you feel inspired, go ahead and send the letter as an important piece of feminist activism.
Logistics: Visit the message board to work with your group on the activity. Once you've agreed on a final version, have one member of the group post your activity to the course website by NOON on Friday.
