Top 10 Things for Teachers to Know:

1. There are more women teachers in the grade levels than in the college/university level.
2. More women are hired to be kindergarten teachers than men.
3. Female teachers still get paid less than male teachers.
4. Male teachers are not considered to teach younger children.
5. Female teachers are seen as more caring and “motherly.”
6. There are more white female teachers than any other race.
7. Female teachers are considered for employment based on their personality more than their skills.
8. Male teachers are hired based on their background.
9. Female teachers are not as respected as their male counterparts.
10. Male teachers are considered for higher positions (principal) than female teachers.

There are 75.3% of teachers who are female working in the grade school level, while there are only 42.3% teaching in the college/university level. This shows that many women do not pursue a higher position for their field. This may be due to positions available for women or just because there is no place for women in higher positions. The field of teaching is not as racially diverse as one may think. There are a lot more white female teachers than there are any other races. There is a huge penalty for motherhood and that penalty is a 7% drop in their earnings for each child that they have. This is a huge concern for mothers to be because it gives them no incentive to return to work and this creates a bigger gender gap between men and women.
