Finding out the Truth about Birth
(Approx 500 words)
Healthy, low-risk women are increasingly delivering their babies via cesarean section, or c-section . In fact, 3 out of 10 women will have a cesarean delivery. Given that cesarean section—along with a variety of other medical interventions—are more likely to harm the mother and child, why is birth becoming more medicalized in our country?
Call up your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, or friend and ask about her birth story. If you've had a child, write your own birth story. Find out where the birth happened; was it at a hospital, at home or at a birth center? Did the mother feel that she had control over the experience? How does she feel about the birth now? Try to make connections between this particular story and the more general themes of this lesson. After you have posted your story, read five other stories and post comments.
Logistics: Publish your story on the course website by NOON on Wednesday.
