Project Eight Instructions
Looking Into the Crystal Ball
Investigating the Wage Gap
(Approx 250 words)
Ever since the Equal Pay Act of 1963, it has been illegal for employers to pay unequal wages to men and women who hold the same job and do the same work. Even so, there is a substantial wage gap that exists today, and on average women make $0.76 for every $1.00 that men make. Minority women fare even worse, and African-American women earn just $0.65 to every dollar earned by white men, and Hispanic women average a mere $0.54 per dollar.
Are you curious about how this wage gap will affect your future earning potential? Your assignment is to research the wage gap in your chosen field of profession. If you're not sure what you'll be doing after you fling that mortar-board hat into the air, then you may choose any field that interests you. Look for professional organizations that represent members of that field, as they often collect and compile employment data. You can also turn to the Bureau of Labor Statistics for more information.
Present your findings in a ‘Top 10 Things to Know' list format and include other interesting findings about your future career. How many women are likely to occupy top positions? How ethnically and racially diverse is the field? Is there a motherhood penalty? Cite all of your sources.
Logistics: Publish your Top 10 list on the website by NOON on Wednesday.
